Thousands keen to join reo hīkoi
More than 13,000 people have already registered to participate in official parades for Māori Language Week.
Māori Language Commission chief executive Ngahiwi Apanui says it's an indication of the increasing support for the week, which starts on September 9.
He says everyone is welcome on the hīkoi, which are part of a drive to build up support for those learning the language.
Other activities could include asking schools to teach children the Māori language and culture, supporting the use of Māori language in signage and on websites, and organising pronunciation courses at workplaces.
The hikoi whakangahau will be in Wellington, Whangārei, Takapuna, Gisborne, Maungakiekie, Manukau and Hamilton.
