Sides picked for boundary battles
Former Labour list MP Moana Mackey for the Government and Tūhono Trust chief executive Dan Te Kanawa for the Opposition have been appointed to sit on the Representation Commission when it sets the boundaries for the Māori electorates.
For the general seats, the political appointees are former Labour cabinet minister Rick Barker and former National minister Roger Sowry.
The commission also includes the chair, the Surveyor-General, the Government Statistician, the Chief Electoral Officer and the Chairperson of the Local Government Commission.
When it reviews the Māori electoral boundaries it is joined by the chief executive of Te Puni Kōkiri.
Statistics New Zealand is due to make the first release of 2018 Census data on September 23, which will include the general and Māori electoral population counts and therefore the number of general and Māori electorates .
