Independent baby uplift inquiry refused
The lawyer for the mother at the centre of an attempted baby uplift from Hawke's Bay Hospital is disappointed the Government has turned down a request for an independent inquiry.
Janet Mason says that shows a lack of good faith on the part of the crown.
Oranga Tamariki has the chief social worker reviewing the incident, and the Commissioner for Children has instigated a wider review into Oranga Tamariki's uplifts of Māori babies.
"Obviously an inquiry is not going to be fair if it is internal. Obviously there are going to be issues with it," Ms Mason says.
