The new chair of Te Ohu Kaimoana says it's the body with the job of talking about Māori fisheries, not outside organisations like LegaSea.
LegaSea, which is a lobby group set up by the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council, says the quota management system has been bad for Māori and bad for fish stocks.
Rangimarie Hunia says the quota management system has worked well for Māori, and provides the Māori fisheries settlement trust, its companies and its iwi partner a sound foundation to advance the interests of the settlement.
"The QMS is an important mechanism, an important tool to be able to give that. Our vision is around te hau o Tangaroa, so we are there to be able to support the children and the atua of Tangaroa to be able to flourish and so I think that’s where we need to be putting a lot more of our emphasis and energy," she says.
Ms Hunia says priorities are trying to get the Government to amend the Māori Fisheries Act in line with the decisions made by iwi after a 10-year review of fisheries settlement structures, and getting the crown to complete the transfer of assets promised under the Māori Aquaculture Settlement.
