Te Mata healing cleared to go

The scars on Te Mata Peak could soon be healed, with the granting a resource consent to undo damage done by construction of a cycle track up the side of the Hawke's Bay landmark.
Independent commissioners Paul Cooney and Rauru Kirikiri said Hastings District Council has apologised for the way it assessed the original consent to Craggy Range, and intends to put in place better cultural governance processes.
It lodged the restoration application in response to calls from tangata whenua and others in the community for the track to be removed.
Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says a new park, Te Rongo Regional Park, will be developed on the eastern side of Te Mata Peak, so the area would become a space for the whole community.
