Fulbright scholar takes aim at mental health in children
Carrie Clifford from Waitaha, Kāti Mamoe and Ngāi Tahu is the winner of this year’s Fulbright-Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Graduate Award.
She’s heading for the United States to look at indigenous conceptualisations of child development, mental health, and treatment.
Her research at the University of Colorado in Denver and John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland is towards a PhD she will complete with the University of Otago.
Ms Clifford says she is trying to move away from a deficit approach to mental-health, with a current focus on diagnosis and labels, towards empowering whānau to understand the difficulties they are facing.
