Businesses unit behind industry training organisations
Employers have spoken out against the Government's plans to shift responsibility for industry trainees and apprentices from industry-run organisations to polytechnics.
An open letter from 148 businesses employing tens of thousands of workers has expressed concerns about the continuity and quality of training and associated support for on-job trainees and apprentices.
Industry Training Federation chief executive Josh Williams says New Zealand leads the OECD for participation rates in formal on-job training, in part because of its workforce demographics.
He says industry training is the only part of the tertiary sector where there has been growth in the last five years, along with higher earnings, and comparable credit completion rates between European, Māori and Pasifika learners.
