Marae lifts tapu as fire clean up continues
A ceremony has been held at Island Bay's Tapu Te Ranga Marae to lift the tapu and allow the clean up of the site where the meeting house was razed by fire a week ago.
Spokesperson Gabriel Tupou says the dawn ritual was conducted by kaumātua of the Home of Compassion, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Ātiawa and marae from the rohe of Pōneke, Porirua and Te Awakairangi.
He says the marae trust is still waiting for Fire and Emergency NZ's forensic report on the blaze.
It is working alongside Wellington City Council officers, councillors and the mayor to address the short-term needs of whānau and consider the future of the marae.
A community service will be held this weekend.
