Political consensus crucial to justice reform

Justice reform group JustSpeak is calling for cross party consensus to respond to the Safe and Effective Justice Advisory Group's initial report.
The report released yesterday called for transformative change, especially with regards to the treatment of Māori.
JustSpeak director Tania Sawicki-Mead says the report makes clear the failures of the justice system have been made worse by punitive, anti-evidence changes to policy and legislation enacted by successive Governments over the past thirty years.
She says the only way forward is a cross-party consensus that the current model is broken and the anti-evidence 'tough-on-crime' approach from politicians does not work.
JustSpeak also wants to see government devolve power and resources to Māori, and addressing the social drivers of crime.
