Canterbury businesses sees value in te reo Māori
Canterbury-based polytechnic Ara says it's seeing a surge of interest from businesses which see value in their staff having a basic understanding of Māori language and culture.
It says so far this year 147 staff members from Canterbury businesses have enrolled for Māori language courses, including Canterbury Rugby Football Union, the Timaru, Ashburton and Hurunui district councils and Christchurch Metro Cricket Association.
Humanities department head Hemi Hoskins says there is a marked shift in the way people see te reo and knowledge about Te Ao Māori as contributing positively to them, their business and the nation.
Learning about the language and culture also helps people learn how to further engage wider ranges of culture, world view and perspective in international contexts.
