Tā moko a story of hope

The co-director of a short documentary on tā moko says it was a privilege to be involved.
Tā Moko – Behind the Tattooed Face will show at the Documentary Edge International Film Festival, which starts in Auckland today.
Dave Atkinson says he and co-director Mick Andrews wanted to help Kaihau couple Sapphire and Bernard share their story about why they got their kauae and mataora respectively.
"As a storyteller I want to try to capture important things and something like tā moko, the re-emergence of it and what it means for Māori, it's a beautiful thing, it's a painful thing, but it's also a story of hope, so to capture that in a 10 minute documentary, it was a real privilege and I was honoured to be a part of it." he says.
Tā Moko – Behind the Tattooed Face plays in the shorts programme at the Documentary Edge Festival on June 2, 8 and 9.
