Patient preparation needed for working life
Employment Minister Willie Jackson says getting young Māori out of long term unemployment isn't an overnight thing.
Mr Jackson is off to Kawerau this week to announce the latest He Poutama Rangatahi initiatives, working with grassroots groups to prepare young people for work.
He says the Provincial Growth Fund and other government programmes are making a difference after years of under-investment in the regions, but it still takes hard work on the ground.
"You actually have to get them in the right frame to get them to a job. Sometimes that takes three months, six months, nine months, one year. If a young person hasn't had any training from their parents, they've seen unemployment around them inter-generational unemployment, it's unrealistic we go in, we fund it, they go to a job nine to five. It doesn't work that way, not in our world," Mr Jackson says.
