Iwi-based scholarship programmes for primary and secondary school teachers are part of a $95 million teacher recruitment and retention package to be included in the Budget.
Education Minister Chris Hipkins says the aim is to address the long term challenge of teacher shortages by training or supporting 3280 additional teachers over the next four years.
There will be 1860 TeachNZ scholarships covering fees and living costs for trainees studying in hard to staff subject areas, 300 Teach First NZ places to recruit graduates and professionals into low decile secondary schools where they teach while completing a postgraduate teaching qualification, 240 places in a new employment-based teacher education programme for secondary teachers, and 80 Iwi-based scholarships.
Mr Hipkins says the number of teacher trainees fell 40 percent under the National Government.
He says to cope with an expected increase in students in Māori-language education, the Education Ministry will partner with iwi to design and pilot regional scholarships, which will support Māori students to train and remain in the profession.
