Hobson’s Choice: Hatemongers or Heroes

The New Zealand Maori Council has asked the New Zealand Human Rights Commission to determine whether Hobson's Pledge is a racially charged and motivated group.
Executive director Matthew Tukaki says the lobby group led by former National Party and ACT leader Don Brash is a divisive group of haters who seek to divide the nation with their tired old man views.
He says its actions and rhetoric further hate speech and the putting down of Māori and peoples of color.
Hobson’s Pledge spokesperson Casey Costello says the group would welcome an investigation as long as the Human Rights Commission applies the law, acts independently, and leaves prejudice at the door.
She says as the commission exists to resolve disputes about unlawful discrimination, it is difficult to see how her group, which calls for the equal treatment of everybody, can be construed as discriminating against anyone.
