Values of ancestors in job scheme
The Wairarapa Rural Education Action Programme wants help from the Provincial Growth Fund for a new initiative for at-risk rangatahi Māori.
Project lead Tom Hullena says Ngā Pūmanawa Tūpuna, which has the backing of the region’s three councils, will offer intensive mentoring and other support to up to 60 rangatahi a year.
The programme will be built on aspects of tikanga Māori and will include a strong focus on how to be successful in the workplace.
It will also involve strengthening the capabilities of employers to work with young people and rangatahi Māori.
Masterton mayor Lyn Patterson says 19.4 percent of young people in the region are not in education, employment or training, compared with a national average of 12 percent.
