Moana workers seek living wage
A union representing workers at Māori-owned Moana New Zealand says if the fishing company can afford to pay its 58 iwi shareholders $8.6 million in dividends, it can afford to pay its staff a living wage.
Staff at Moana’s Ruakākā site return to work this morning after striking on Friday.
FIRST Union organiser Emir Hodzic says the union has been negotiating since January, but the offer on the table is just 3 percent above the minimum wage.
He says the company claims any increase would result in redundancies.
Moana reported a net profit after tax in the year to September of $21.4 million.
