Hikurangi sunrise to replace sugar rush

There’s a new dawn for a Gisborne trust that helps people combat diabetes, and it’s on top of Mount Hikurangi.
Huringa Pai Charitable Trust has been given $66,000 by the New Zealand Community Trust to buy an 18-seat van.
Chairperson Carol Shepherd says Huringa Pai focuses on healthy living including exercise and diet.
As well as providing transport to activities like whānau group fitness classes, the van will be used for the trust’s monthly treks to Mt Hikurangi.
Ms Shepherd says for some of the participants who have always wished to climb their maunga and connect with their whenua, it is the start of their Huringa Pai journey.
They then go on to join other activities, becoming role models for other whanau.
