Tamihere takes up clubs for golfers

Auckland mayoral candidate John Tamihere hopes the votes of golfers and speedway enthusiasts will deliver him the chains of office.
He’s promising to overrule the Mount Albert Local Board and preserve Chamberlain Park as an 18-hole golf course.
He also pledged to continue Speedway at Western Springs until a fit for purpose alternative is available, and to allow Eden Park to be used for non-sporting events like concerts.
Mr Tamihere says major sporting bodies had to work together because the city can no longer afford the one sport per stadium concept.
The Mount Albert Local Board wants to address a lack of playing fields in its area by reducing the Chamberlain Park golf course to 9 holes and using the land freed up for other sporting codes.
Mr Tamihere says he wants to return democracy to the neighbourhoods, as too much power in the city is controlled by faceless managers in central Auckland.
