Knowledge gap drives Māori media fears
Māori media organisations are urging members to have their say on a review of Māori television and radio.
Māori Development Minister Nanaia Mahuta asked Te Puni Kōkiri to conduct a Māori media shift review after widespread pushback in the industry to plans being concocted by Māori broadcast funding agency Te Māngai Pāho.
Hineani Melbourne from Māori screen umbrella group Ngā Aho Whakaari says it’s likely the review will define what happens in the sector for the next 10 or 20 years.
"The reason we’re worried is it is being conducted by people who have no knowledge of the Māori media sector and no knowledge of working in it and the parameters we work within," she says.
Ngā Aho Whakaari is hosting hui to discuss the review at the St Columba conference centre in Ponsonby tomorrow afternoon and Tamatekapua Marae in Rotorua on Thursday morning.
