Treaty calls for end to violence against women

A campaign for a new, global treaty to end violence against women and girls is being launched in Porirua this afternoon.
Te Whare Tiaki Wāhine Refuge executive director Caroline Herewini, who sits on the international steering group for the Every Woman Treaty, says it has the backing of womens rights activists in 128 countries.
She says for Māori, it's clear more work is done to address high levels of violence.
"Something has to change because for everyone else it's one in three, for us it's one in two. That's a horrible stat to think that many of our whānau are in trauma, are suffering, are hurting, and if you ask them, all they want is this to stop," she says.
The launch of the Every Woman Treaty will be broadcast online from 3pm at [https://zoom.us/j/365567840]
