Ngāti Pāoa the 6th of the 12 Hauraki iwi to sign the Hauraki Collective Deed of Settlement

Friday 's signing came despite a last minute bid by the faction controlling the post governance settlement entity to block it.
Adam Gifford has this report.
"About 30 people gathered at Karaka Bay on Auckland's eastern edge, the same spot Ngāti Pāoa ancestors signed the the Treaty of Waitangi 170 years ago. The Ngāti Pāoa Iwi Trust sought an injunction this morning too late to stop the signing. Negotiator Morehu Wilson says the vote to ratify the settlement got 94 per cent support and the members wishes should be respected. He says issues the trust has raised about overlapping claims and the commercial structures for ownership of Hauraki Forest can be resolved by building strong relationshsips with neighbouring iwi. Mr Wilson says now Ngāti Pāoa iwi have signed, the other 6 iwi holding out may also be encouraged to put pen to paper," says Adam Gifford.
