King’s gumboot plan as NZer of Year
The 2019 Kiwibank New Zealander of the year has been given the big thumbs up by the number one New Zealander.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was in Auckland last night to present the tohu to Mike King.
She says the former comedian has put an incredible amount of energy over the years advocating for improvements in the way mental health and suicide are dealt with, including creating his Nutters Club radio and television show and setting up the Key to Life Trust.
"He talked last night about his plans to open or create a fundraiser for young people to be able to access free counselling so he will be seeking for us all to wear gumboots on a Friday in April as part of that fundraiser. He does incredible work and it was so good to see him recognised and i know there were a lot of people sharing an enormous amount of pride in what he does," Ms Ardern says.
