Taranaki Whānui eyes Mt Crawford for housing
A Wellington iwi has teamed up with the government’s Land For Housing programme to assess whether they can build affordable homes on on Mount Crawford on the Miramar Peninsula.
Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust representing Taranaki Whānui has a right of first refusal over 11 hectares of surplus Defence and Corrections land.
Trust chair Wayne Mulligan says the deal is still in its early stages with the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
The parties will need to work with a wider group of stakeholders, including Wellington City Council.
He says the potential development of the Mt Crawford site marks an important milestone for Taranaki Whānui aspirations to restore, revitalise, strengthen and enhance its cultural, social and economic well-being and to deliver affordable housing solutions to our members and community.
Cultural and historic aspects of the site also need to be preserved.
A Taranaki Whānui plan to develop its land at Shelly Bay below Mt Crawford has been mired in legal challenges, and its developer The Wellington Company needs to seek a new resource consent for it to proceed.
