Moko revival takes flight

Foxton’s Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom will this weekend feature a live demonstration of ta moko using traditional tools.
Heemi Te Peeti, who is one of the few tā moko artists to have mastered the traditional uhi or tools, will carry out a full facial male tattoo over three days from Friday.
He says it’s a chance to inform the public and provide a living presence and spiritual dimension to the Ngā Hau Ngākau exhibition now on display at the museum.
Mr Te Peeti says he saw a connection between the show, which depicts Māori bird ancestors, and te uhi o Mataora, the tools of male facial tā moko, which include birdbone chisels.
