Tribes take up kaitiaki role for Maungauika-North Head

The chair of the Tāmaki Makaurau Tūpuna Maunga Authority says the transfer of management responsibility for Maungauika North Head marks an important step for the Tāmaki Makaurau settlement.
Ownership of the Devonport maunga was transferred to the 13 iwi and hapū of Tāmaki in the 2014 collective settlement, but it continued to be managed by the Department of Conservations Te Papa Atawhai.
Paul Majurey says it has taken until now for the department and the Auckland Council to negotiate the transfer, because of the cost of maintaining the historical navy gun emplacements and tunnels on the mountain.
He says multiple iwi have direct connections to the maunga, which stands at the entrance to the Waitematā Harbour.
"We have around Torpedo Bay, Te Haukapua, the place Tainui waka stayed. The names around those areas, Maungauika, Takapuna, were named by the tūpuna of the waka. Lots of pā and kainga around there from many of the tribes so in a very real sense we share those histories, we share those experiences," Mr Majurey says.
He says as there is no car access to the tihi or summit there is no need to change current arrangements.
