Original writing better than translation
BRIAN MORRIS INTERVIEW CLICK HERE
A Māori publisher wants to see more original writing in Māori, rather than books being translated from English.
Huia executive director Brian Morris says a lot of publishing houses are now producing books in te reo Māori, especially for young people.
But he says there seems to be a perception the way to get a good Maori story is to get it written in English and then translated.
"We just need to be aware that's an emerging trend and we still need to encourage those writers to write original stories in Māori and get them published so we are still on the search for those people who write in Māori and can write a good story in Māori," Mr Morris says.
Huia is also working with the Ministry of Education to publish iwi stories for schools.
