Whānau ora dividend helps outcomes

Whānau Ora Minister Peeni Henare says he’s relaxed with the shareholders of North Island whānau ora commissioning agency Te Pou Matakana taking a $600,000 dividend.
The payment was raised in the annual select committee review of the Māori Development Ministry.
Minister Henare says the prospect of a payment if outcomes were met was included in the agency’s contract negotiated with Te Puni Kōkiri.
"The fact remains if we continue to commission or contract in ways we have done over the past 30 years, we are going to get the same results. Whānau ora, it works, it is a different approach, and I am more than happy with the incentives given to our providers or our commissioning agencies to try to get the results," he says.
He hopes the money will be reinvested into other services run by Te Pou Matakana shareholders, which include the National Urban Māori Authority, Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust and Manukau Urban Māori Authority.
