New hope for Ngāpuhi settlement
A Ngāpuhi kuia says it’s important to get a settlement to the iwi’s claims so hapū can give their people something to come home to.
Nora Rameka from Bay of Islands-based Ngāti Rehia says she’s voting in support of getting settlement talks restarted.
She says there was always space for hapū in the negotiating structure, and the evolved mandate should make that clearer.
The tribe has a responsibility not just to those who have been part of the journey but also to the future.
"We want our people to come home but the way to get them home is to have some offer of work, not to come home and live in shacks and go on drugs and that is a huge social issue at home when we don't want it. We want to be able to create a foundation for our future of Ngāpuhi," Ms Rameka says.
There is a meeting for Ngāpuhi people this evening at Alexandra Park Racecourse from 5.30pm.
