Election challenge a winner for Waatea

Radio Waatea’s Te Wero 2017 series leading up to last year’s general election has won the tohu for best syndicated show at this year’s Māori Radio Awards.
The Auckland-based station was also a finalist in the current affairs and website sections.
Station manager Bernie O’Donnell says the award showcases Waatea’s commitment to giving an informed Māori perspective on events of the day.
The supreme award presented at the ceremony in Rotorua on Saturday night, Te Pou Irirangi Toa o Te Tau, went to Whakatāne based Tūmeke FM.
Tūmeke also won the best station imaging, best current affairs or talk show, best programme director, and best outside broadcast awards.
Te Korimako o Taranaki took home four awards, including the new E Tū Whānau – Inspiring Positive Change award.
The youth award went to Riria Dalton-Reedy from Radio Ngāti Porou.
