Dr Pauline Kingi to probe police pick
Lawyer and former Te Puni Kōkiri senior manager Pauline Kingi has been appointed to inquire into the appointment of Wally Haumaha as deputy commissioner of police.
The appointment has been attacked by victim advocate Louise Nicholas, on the basis of comments made in 2004 by Mr Haumaha about fellow Rotorua police officers she alleged raped her when she was a teenager.
It emerged that Police Minister Stuart Nash was not aware of the comments attributed to Mr Haumaha before he recommended his appointment.
Internal Affairs Minister Tracey Martin says the purpose of the inquiry is to examine, identify, and report on the adequacy of the process that led to the appointment of a deputy commissioner of police.
It will not look into the suitability of the Mr Haumaha for the role.
The inquiry will start on August 6 and Dr Kingi is to report back within six weeks.
