Māori needed in zero carbon path
Te Ora Taiao – the New Zealand Climate and Health Council, wants to see more emphasis on Māori in the path to a zero carbon economy.
The Government is consulting on the Zero Carbon Bill, which will set out a policy framework for New Zealand to reach net zero climate pollution in the coming decades.
Te Ora Taiao co-convenor Rhys Jones says says addressing climate change can be good for health and well being and create a fairer and more prosperous society if it’s done right – but if done wrong it can have an unnecessarily negative impact of Māori, Pacific Island and low income families.
Dr Jones says the consultation process doesn’t seem to envisage any partnership with Māori, iwi or Pacific communities.
Te Ora Taiao says the 2050 target won’t meet New Zealand's commitments under the Paris Agreement, and should be brought forward to the 2030s.
