Growing Up in NZ data fuels reo research
A project to look at pathways to Māori language retention and revitalisaiton has won funding from the Children and Families Research Fund.
He Ara Ki Ngā Rautaki E Ora Tonu Ai Te Reo Māori is led by Professor Te Kani Kingi, Te Whare Wānanga ō Awanuiārangi.
The fund hands out $750,000 a year to support further analysis of the information gathered by the Growing Up in New Zealand longitudinal study.
Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni says the Government has restored funding cut by the previuous Government which will allow all 6800 study families to participate in the current round of data collection.
It also wants to encourage deeper investigation of the data so that government policies can be shaped to better meet the needs of children and families in New Zealand.
Other successful proposals include research on identifying factors that impact on emotional and social resilience from pre-birth to 4.5 year, looking at self-control in pre-schoolers, factors that promote early literacy, and how does participation in early childhood education affect child health and development.
The third round of funding is now open, and applications must be with the Ministry of Social Development by August 31.
