Cancer takes wahine toa Talei Morrison
The death of kapa haka veteran Talei Morrison to cervical cancer on Saturday overshadowed the Tāmaki Makaurau Te Matatini regional competition, with many of the roopu including a tribute in their performances.
After she was diagnosed with the disease last August, the 42-year-old started the Smear Your Mea campaign to encourage other wāhine Maori to be tested for cancer.
She was taken back yesterday to Rotorua from the Hamilton hospice where she died, and her funeral is on Wednesday at Te Papaiōuru Marae in Ōhinemutu, followed by a burial at at Kauae Cemetery near Ngongotaha.
