The Health Research Council says a half term review of a seven-year funding agreement with four independent research organisations has confirmed the benefits of long-term stable funding.
Maori health research investment manager Stacey Pene says researchers have been able to extend their research plans and goals, secure patents and get published in high-impact journals.
The funding has also allowed those organisations to strengthen links with clinicians, health providers, policy makers, community groups and industry.
It means a more diverse workforce within the health sector is grappling with a wide range of complex challenges in contemporary New Zealand society.
As a result of the review, further funding totaling $17 million has been released to Whanganui's Te Atawhai o te Ao: Independent Maori Institute for Environment and Health, Whakauae Research Services, Malaghan Institute of Medical Research, and Medical Research Institute of New Zealand.
