Kingi Taurua the voice of generations


Soldier, bureaucrat, broadcaster and champion of all things Ngapuhi, Kingi Taurua has today been laid to rest among his Ngati Rehia ancestors.
His tangi has moved around marae in the north where he had deep links, ending at Te Tii Mangonui northeast of Kerikeri.
MP Shane Jones, who said his farewell at Oromahoe, the home of the ancestor Te Haratua who was the first Ngapuhi to cut down the flagstaff at Kororareka.
He says Mr Taurua thought with his blood, which was 100 percent Ngapuhi.
"He was a provocateur and he didn't follow any algabraic sort of analysis. He was passionate and whatever kaupapa bubbled forth he lost no time in letting people understand what he felt were the grievances of the people," Mr Jones says.
He says when Kingi Taurua spoke on the marae, he was the voice of many generations.
