Kiro heads strong team for welfare review


Former Children's Commissioner Cindy Kiro is to lead an expert group to advise the Government on its promised overhaul of the welfare system.
Social Development Minister Carmel Sepuloni says the Welfare Expert Advisory Group has been asked to undertake a broad-ranging review and suggest ways to ensure people have an adequate income and standard of living, are treated with respect, can live in dignity, and are able to participate meaningfully in their communities.
It will consider the overall purpose of the system,as well as make specific recommendations on the current obligations and sanctions regime.
Other members of the group include sociologist Tracey McIntosh, paediatrician Innes Asher, economist Ganesh Nana, NZ Human Rights Review Tribunal member Huhana Hickey, welfare advocate Kay Brereton, uniojnmist Robert Reid, former Business NZ chief executive Phil O'Reilly, Council of Christian Social Services executive officer Trevor McGlinchey, young Pacific leader Latayvia Tualasea Tautai and social policy researcher Charles Waldegrave.
The group will report back to the Government with its recommendations in February 2019.
