NCEA to be overhauled
Education Minister Chris Hipkins has called for submissions on proposals to overhaul the national school-leaving qualification.
At stake is the opportunity to change how NCEA is used to prepare students for life after school.
He says employers are telling the government students coming out of school don’t have the right skills, students say more flexibility is needed and teachers say there’s too much assessment, getting in the way of learning.
The proposals from a ministerial advisory committee include putting a greater focus on critical thinking, digital literacy and civic participation and teaching students how to work well alongside others.
Mr Hipkins says he’s looking at programmes to address Maori and Pacific underachievement, but he doesn’t want to see a situation where achievement is raised by channeling students into a narrower range of educational opportunities.
