Maori land information for the Waitangi Catchment Area in the Bay of Islands/Pewhairangi has been added to the Maori Maps website as a pilot to increase the site's value to users.

The maps for the catchment will now display block name and area, total owners, management name details and soil information by supplementing information from Maori Land Online with data from Landcare Research.

If there is positive user feedback, site manager Te Potiki National Trust will add land information nationwide.

Trust chair Paora Tapsell says the pilot was approved by the Amokura Iwi Consortium, which represents seven Taitokerau iwi.

The site was developed by ZestIT with funding from the University of Otago through its National Science Challenge project Mauri Whenua Ora,

Maori Maps was developed as a website portal to the 768 tribal marae of New Zealand.

Dr Tapsell says providing land information will enable a richer understanding of the Maori landscape and provide another avenue for people to make connections back to their ancestral marae.
