Good job for Maniapoto future
Maniapoto Maori Trust Board has appointed Sonya Hetet as its chief executive for the period that will include concluding the King Country iwi's historic treaty settlement and replacing the board with a post governance settlement body.
Ms Hetet has worked for the board for eight years and been the interin chief executive for four months.
She says the former negotiators led by Nanaia Mahuta had come up with an excellent agreement in principle, and the current team is filling in the detail with the aim of initialing a deed of settlement by the end of the year and signing it off in mid 2019.
She says Maniapoto wants the same as everyone else.
"We want good housing, we all want good housing for our whanau. We all want a roof over our heads. We all want the best education for our whanau. We want the best opportunities to get good jobs, bring a good pay packet in," Ms Hetet says.
The board's activities are keenly followed by Maniapoto people, with live streaming of its hui typically attracting more than 2000 viewers.
