Nuki ki te Puku aiming for Asia

Leading Maori entrepreneurs and food producers with help from crown research agencies have banded together to develop high nutrition food products for export.
Board member Wayne Mulligan from Fomana Capital says the first product from the Nuku ki te Puku consortium is a high protein, low carbohydrate nut bar aimed at the Singapore and China markets.
He says there are huge opportunities for Maori producers.
"The world is really turning to healthy eating choices and we want to be at the forefront of that. It just happens that our first product is snack food and we think there is a huge market opportunity in Asia for snack foods. What will matter is how we promote the natural, healthy, organic New Zealand. That is a really important point for us. We don't want to be part of kai that’s bad," Mr Mulligan says.
He says better nutrition products is a way to address issues like type 2 diabetes, which is costing the Chinese government over a $100 billion a year in treatment.
