Raukura Waikato money manager pleads to fraud

A fraud spree which brought down a popular Waikato iwi social services agency had its conclusion in Hamilton District Court today.
Former Raukura Waikato Social Services Trust financial manager Hemo Thompson pleaded guilty to defrauding it of about $60,000 over a four year period from November 2010 to November 2014.
She faced 67 charges of theft in a special relationship and one of obtaining by deception.
The trust, which is now in liquidation, had contracts with the ministries of Social Development and Corrections, the Waikato District Health Board and CYFS to offer are range of services from its offices in Hamilton, Huntly, Springhill Corrections Facility and Morrinsville.
Serious Fraud Office director Julie Read says Thompson had control over the Raukura funds and disguised the activity as genuine expenditure.
She will reappear in the Hamilton District Court on June 1.
