Polyfest opens in cultural blend

Thousands of tauira will be hoping months of preparation and long hours of rehearsal will pay off over the next few days on the six stages of the Manukau Sports Bowl.
It’s Polyfest time, with a record 10,000 plus students in 250 roopu from 69 schools taking part in the annual Auckland secondary schools cultural festival from today until Saturday.
Director Seiuli Terri Leo-Mauu says it’s always exciting to see the young people celebrating and nurturing their culture, and the way cultures weave together which is the theme of this year’s event.
"We’ve got lots of our kids who are blended, they might be Maori-Samoan, they might be Palagi and something else and it's a nice way for them to come here, express themselves and learn something from, maybe not just from their own culture but other cultures as well," she says.
Special guests this year include Mount Richmond Special School and Tereora College from the Cook Islands.
