Waikato Council stumps up for pest fence

Waikato Regional Council has agreed to give the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust $350,000 a year to maintain its 47km predator proof fence.
The money, which will also be used for pest surveillance and ecological restoration, makes up in part for the loss of Department of Conservation funding.
The sanctuary is a collaboration between the community, iwi and other landowners, the council and central government.
Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari manager Melissa Sinton says the trust has reintroduced 13 threatened species, including the western North Island brown kiwi, takahe, tuatara, kokako and giant weta.
