Food and mosquito nets priority for Tonga recovery
Last minute donations, including one from Ngati Whatua Orakei, are helping to fill seven containers with relief supplies for Tonga.
Tropical Cyclone Gita tore through the islands just over a week ago before tracking down into the Tasman Sea and drenching parts of Te Waipounamu.
Project coordinator Will Ilolahia says the priority is non-perishable food, water, and mosquito nets and spray.
"(With) all the food destroyed by the hurricane they will be out of food in three to four weeks so mainly that's the need at the moment. We are also concerned that with all the weather around the risk of dengue fever will be increased so sprays and mosquito nets will be really handy," he says.
The containers are being packed at the Tongan Methodist Church in Mangere for shipping on Saturday.
