Ground shakes as Mataatua comes out strong
FULL INTERVIEW WITH WIREMU HUTA MARTIN
Mataatua has set a high standard for kapa haka as teams try to book their spot in the regional competitions for next year’s Te Matatini.
Commentator William Huta Martin says the weekend competition in Te Teko set high standards of language, composition and performance.
Saturday featured some younger and older roopu, with a softer sound coming from kuia and koroua, but on Sunday it was all on.
"The ground shook, the air vibrated with the performances of our teams. The older people from Tauranga Moana, Ruatahunua, Te Whanau a Apanui, Te Whakatohea, Ngati Awa, all came out to participate and to utilise the reo," he says.
The 5 kapa goingthrough to Te Matatini are Opotiki Mai Tawhiti, with Tauira Mai Tawhiti, Te Whanau a Apanui, Tutara Kauika ki Rangataua and Te Kapa Haka o Ruatoki.
