Poor whanau hit hardest by inflation

Inflation reached 2.4 percent for low spending households last year, but for high-spending households it was only 1.3 percent.
Statistics New Zealand says low spenders were hit by price increases for petrol, rent, and insurance.
Inflation for big spenders was kept lower because of price falls for luxury items, such as specials on new cars.
Consumer prices manager Geoffrey Wong says lower retail prices and continued quality improvements to telecommunications services have also been more beneficial for those with extra money to spend.
