Mataatua wharenui journey told

The saga of the wharenui Mataatua has been told in a new book to be launched in Whakatane next week.
Mataatua Wharenui – Te Whare i Hoki Mai by Hirini Mead, Layne Harvey, Pouroto Ngaropo and the late Te Onehou Phillis tells how the house was built in 1875 as a beacon of hope in desolate times to help strengthen the iwi.
It was soon removed and taken for exhibition in Australia and England.
It ended up in the Otago Museum until the persistence and determination of Ngati Awa saw it returned to Whakatane in 2011.
The book is published by Huia.
