Charter school protests a storm in a teacup

Labour deputy leader Kelvin Davis says pupils and parents at charter schools will notice little difference once their status changes.
The Labour-led Government is scrapping the controversial policy and will give each existing school a choice to becoming a special character school within the state system, and integrated school where the government pays the teachers, or a self-funding private school.
Mr Davis says the policy’s architect, ACT leader David Seymour, is trying to whip up protests in the charter schools, but the changes are mainly around governance, property and teacher registration.
"There’s nothing that says they can't teach the way they taught, they can't have the same curriculum they have always had, so a storm in a teacup. These schools will be able to continue and I reckon by 3 o'clock on the day of the transition they will be saying 'What on earth were we upset about,'" he says.
