Te Putahi a Toi 20 years championing Maori knowledge

Massey University has marked the 20th anniversary of Te Putahi a Toi, its school of Maori knowledge.
Professor Meihana Durie says it was a chance to remember some of the eminent kaumatua who took part in the opening, and the hopes they had for the school.
He says there are now more options for Maori in education of which Te Putahi is just one.
There is also much more acceptance of the idea of matauranga Maori.
"We've had enough research done by our own people to really say that matauranga Maori as a system of knowledge has its own validity and has a space in the academy and that's a really important finding. There is a tendency in the academy to diminish the importance of Maori knowledge as a valid way of learning or a valid way of exploring knowledge," Professor Durie says.
It's critical Maori are helping to guide the way universities evolve, including developing collaborative research with Maori and communities rather than research on Maori communities.
