Cabinet picks point to real change

Former Labour MP John Tamihere says the new coalition action shows MMP finally working the way it was supposed to.
The Waipareira Trust chief executive says cries that New Zealand First’s influence in choosing the new Government was somehow undemocratic ignore the fact New Zealanders voted for MMP to curb the major parties implementing radical economic policies without a mandate.
After years of MMP governments tinkering with a status quo that only worked to transfer the country’s wealth to the rich, the scene is set for real change.
"If you look at New Zealand First where Winston (Peters) says he will have a government of change, there are portfolios there that can change things that Labour is on line with this. Jacinda Ardern is not a (former Labour PM Helen) Clark. She is a new generation understanding the adverse impact of neoliberal economics, so I am really happy where New Zealand First has landed," Mr Tamihere says.
The big challenge for the new coalition will be getting its policies implemented by an entrenched bureaucracy that has historically failed to deliver for Maori.
